Online Resources for Developing Your Breeding Program

    - by IFCBE Member Ginger Corley
    of Rain Mountain Chinooks
    March 28, 2002

Breeding a dog as rare as the Chinook requires care in the planning stages, along with care throughout the breeding, whelping, and socialization of the pups. Though the bitch’s owner does assume the majority of the responsibility and work, the owner of the stud dog has responsibilities too. The two key issues are determining if a specific bitch is going to improve the breed when bred to a specific stud and if that is not the case, the stud owner has the responsibility to turn down the offer and the actual stud contract itself.

After surveying a number of breeders worldwide and from a variety of breeds, I have compiled this information in a two part article, Studley DoRight Does His Paperwork originally published in the March and April issues of the Eventer, a northwest canine events newspaper. These articles are posted publicly at http://www.rainmountain.net/stud_info.html.

    IFCBE and AKC FSS

    - by IFCBE Member Nancy Bartol, Intervale Chinooks
    February 2002

The International Federation of Chinook Breeders and Exhibitors has exciting news to report - we are now listed as a Chinook breed contact for the American Kennel Club's Foundation Stock Service!

The Foundation Stock Service (FSS) is a record keeping service provided by the American Kennel Club for all purebred breeds not currently registerable with the AKC.

The intent of AKC FSS is to provide rare breed fanciers with an optional record keeping service staffed by AKC professionals who are responsible for maintaining a breed's pedigree and ownership records. It's important to note that recording of a dog in FSS does not constitute AKC recognition - this is a record keeping service only, and the Chinook listed with AKC FSS will not now be able to participate in AKC venues such as conformation, agility, tracking, and herding. Detailed information on AKC FSS can be found on the AKC website.

Pedigrees are an important part of what defines any breed and so the accurate listing of our Chinook pedigrees in the AKC FSS system is significant - not just for today's Chinook fancier but for the Chinook fancier of tomorrow, who will trust in us to have provided them with as accurate pedigree information as possible.

Through the diligent efforts of club president Diana Fowler, IFCBE members as well as other Chinook owners, have the unique opportunity to list their Chinooks with FSS at no cost using the information from their Chinook's United Kennel Club registration certificate and pedigree.

The UKC has been registering Chinooks since 1991 and the UKC Registry contains the most detailed and accurate Chinook pedigree database in existence. The UKC was the first national Registry to endorse DNA parent verification and many Chinooks in the UKC Registry have been DNA profiled and also parent verified. Recording UKC Chinook pedigrees in the AKC FSS database makes sense because doing so provides Chinook owners with accuracy and consistency across the breadth and depth of the Chinook pedigrees.

IFCBE believes that it is the Chinook owner that must make the decision to list or not list their Chinooks with AKC FSS. We are organizing a UKC pedigree and owner database, and recording the information provided to us by the Chinook's owner. Owners who submit copies of their Chinook's UKC pedigree and registration certification to IFCBE will later be issued AKC FSS certificates based exclusively on the UKC information that they have submitted.

There are other Chinook breed clubs. One of the clubs, Chinooks Worldwide, has submitted a database of Chinook pedigrees to AKC FSS that they have compiled. If information has already been submitted on your Chinooks for you by the Chinooks Worldwide, please do your part and verify the accuracy of your AKC FSS certificates to make certain that your name and address is correct and that the information for your dogs and their ancestors is listed correctly. You won't find detailed pedigree information on the certificate provided to you by AKC FSS. One way to verify your Chinook's pedigree information already submitted is to purchase a three-generation pedigree from AKC FSS for $15.00. Another way that is at no cost, is to return the AKC FSS certificate you've already received, and send in a copy of your UKC pedigree and certificate to IFCBE for inclusion in the UKC based database.

Again, when you submit data and when you receive your AKC FSS certificate, check carefully - make sure the data that you submitted was entered correctly. Any incorrect information should be reported directly to AKC FSS or to IFCBE and Diana Fowler.

IFCBE members have mixed feelings over this new relationship the Chinook has with AKC. The Chinook's listing with AKC FSS does not automatically mean eventual acceptance as a breed by AKC but it could be a first step. One Chinook owner summed up this important breed issue in this way: "This is a time that I have been (kind of) dreading -- I personally am nervous about the whole AKC thing (I know we are years away). This is an adventure for Chinooks - who knows where we are going, but we are on the ride together!"   To learn more about AKC FSS and the Chinook, please contact IFCBE club president, Diana Fowler at Chinooks@bellsouth.net.

The IFCBE Offers Scholarship for Genetics Seminar

    - from the desk of the Information Manager
    June 7, 2001

The Federation will provide a $20 scholarship, to Federation Breeder/Exhibitor Members, for successful completion of the Fall session of Cornell University's "Canine Genetics" distance learning course. To receive this scholarship, attendees must sign up as part of the IFCBE group to take the Fall 2001 course, be IFCBE Breeder/Exhibitor Members during the time the course is in session, and successfully complete the course.

If you are a breeder that wants to learn about breeding better dogs, the Federation feels this course will be a valuable stepping stone in that direction. The regular cost of this course is $350. However, Cornell offers group discounts. The Federation would like to assemble a group of at least 11 people to take the course. You do not have to be a Federation member, or even a Chinook owner, to sign up on our list for a group rate. If we get at least 11 people, each attendee on our list will get a 20 percent discount. That will drop the cost from $350 per person to $280. Upon completion, Federation Breeder/Exhibitors will receive a $20 scholarship.

    The course will cover:

    • Basic concepts and definitions
    • Probabilities and their use in predicting outcomes
    • Sex linkage and other modes of inheritance for traits controlled by a single locus
    • Two-loci interactions (epistasis)
    • Testing hypotheses for genetic inheritance (chi-square testing)
    • Linkage
    • Selection against recessive alleles including use of molecular information
    • Coat color

To get on the list for this course, or just get more information, please contact Joyce Maley, IFCBE Information Manager. Remember, the more people that sign up, the lower the cost.

For more information on the course itself, please take a look at the article to the right.

Distance Learning Canine Genetics Seminar Offered by Cornell

    - from the desk of the Information Manager
    May 25, 2001

Cindy Cooke of the United Kennel Club, Inc., has just posted a notice about the availability of a distance learning course on canine genetics. "The Department of Animal Science at Cornell University has developed an interactive distance-education course on canine genetics that is intended for all dog enthusiasts," according to Cindy Cooke.

Cornell plans to offer the course at least once a semester, and once in the summer. If you that want official Cornell University Credit, the cost is $650. For non-credit the cost drops to $350. If you are only interested in the canine genetics CD, you can get that for $99. In addition, if you sign up for the course in groups, Cornell offers discounts to groups as small as five people.

The lectures are delivered on a CD, and lab exercises are available on the web. There will be several faculty members to provide interaction and assistance throughout the course. In addition, a teaching assistant assigned to help the students through the lab exercises. Prior students provided feedback that there was more math used than they expected, but that they understood the necessity, and did receive the help they needed to work through it.

This course is for PC-compatibles only, so unfortunately there isn't any MAC version. You need the following system requirements if you want to take the course:

    • 66MHz 486 or better PC-compatible system with Windows 9x or NT v4.0
    • 16MB or more memory (32MB or more for Windows NT)
    • Internet access (28.8kbs or better recommended)
    • Web browser software (Netscape 3x or IE 4x and up)
    • Sound card/speakers
    • 4X or faster CD player

According to Susan Herbert, of Cornell University, there are still a few openings for the June 4th class, but there are only a few more days to sign up. The next course will be offered in September or October. Please contact Joyce Maley, IFCBE Information Manager if you are interested in signing up for the Fall class as a member of a group.

    April 4, 2001

Several Chinooks in Florida have been actively pursuing sheep herding work. In February, Chinooks and their people meet at a farm to participate in a weekend-long herding clinic with Bob Vest, a leading stock dog trainer. A variety of breeds come, and everyone benefits from watching other dogs work and observing and hearing Mr. Vest. These photos show three Chinooks at work:

Robert Fowler with WoodsRunner Sheluk Naii

    Hurricane Tunco's Wind Walker
    Hurricane Tunco's Wind Walker (Walker).

Shelley and Hunter have passed the first leg of the beginning herding title, and Robert and Nancy are looking forward to an upcoming herding trial at which they will be competing to complete the HCT title. Walker has just been introduced to stock, and will be instict tested at the trial. Our work is done through AHBA - the American Herding Breed Association which has graciously included the Chinook in their recognized breed list. If you would like more information about herding with Chinooks, please contact Nancy or Robert, or go directly to the AHBA home page: http://www.primenet.com/~joell/ahba/ahba.btm.

    News Release, August 14, 2000, 8:07 PM Eastern Time -- Chinook-L and COA-L,

Our first IFCBE Specialty was a rousing success. The prize everyone was vying for is the IFCBE Best of Breed sledding collar. That coveted collar went to U-CD GR CH 'PR' Rain Mountain Rangeley Runner, who also has her CGC and TT certification. Rangeley was produced by Rain Mountain Chinooks, breeder Ginger Corley, and located in Washington state. She is owned by Penthea Burns and Connie Jones and was exhibited by Jessica Maurer. She had some formidable competition also. Among the competition was:

The current U.K.C. #1 Top Ten Chinook, U-CD GR CH WoodsRunner Sheluk Naii, out of WoodsRunner Chinooks, breeders Bob and Connie Jones, of Maine, and exhibited by her owner Diana Fowler of Florida.

The 1999 #1 Top Ten Chinook and 1999 National Specialty Winner, GR CH Hurricane Mackenzie, out of Hurricane Chinooks, breeder Joyce Maley of South Carolina, and exhibited by his owner Joyce Maley.

The 1999 Top Ten Best of Breed winner, GR CH WoodsRunner Duncan, out of WoodsRunner Chinooks, breeders Bob and Connie Jones of Maine, and exhibited by his owner Connie Jones.

The 2000 National Specialty Winner, GR CH Hurricane Chaser, out of Hurricane Chinooks, breeder Joyce Maley of South Carolina, and exhibited by Penthea Burns of Maine.

The current #4 Top Ten Chinook, CH Rain Mountain Malipaluk, out of Rain Mountain Chinooks, breeder, Stephanie Broughton of Washington state.

The current #7 Top Ten Chinooks, CH WoodsRunner Allagash Springs, out of WoodsRunner Chinooks, breeders Bob and Connie Jones, owned by J Maurer and B Jones and shown by Penthea Burns.

Also showing was the newest U.K.C. Chinook Champion, CH Hurricane Tunco's Wind Walker, owned by Nancy Fishinger and Sandy Smith, and shown by Nancy Fishinger. New to the show ring were WoodsRunner Meka shown by owner Michael Crowley. Also shown were Northern Lights Cupid and WoodsRunner Rain both owned by Karen Fass.

Last but not least, was the cute little puppy, Wren Hill Flint, owned and shown by Bob Jones, who later in the weekend took a Puppy Group 1--very impressive!

So you can see, the competition was tough, but it was great to see all the new faces who braved the show ring for the first time. To top it off, before and after the show was a great time to just get together to talk and have fun. We had a lot of people come just to say hi, sit around and talk and one even came to pick up a new puppy from one of the exhibitors. We spent hours talking about all the things our Chinooks do at home, the fun we have working with them and our future plans. Both days we sat around the table for lunch in our lawn chairs just like a picnic.

I want to thank everyone for the support that made this Specialty such a success and so much fun. Thanks for coming!

    Chinook Specialty Judge is Announced

    - from the desk of the Information Manager
    July 16, 2000

The Federation is honored to announce the judge for its first Regional Specialty: the Honorable Phillip A. Lanard III. The Specialty is during the first show of ARBA's New England Classic on August 5, 2000. This is pre-entry only and entries close on July 25, 2000, so make sure you get your entries in.

Mr. Lanard started his experience with purebred dogs in 1945, when he purchased a Collie and started working in obedience. He moved on to breed classes by showing Golden Retrievers and Boxers for friends. Shortly after that, he bred his first Champion, an English Cocker. In 1952 he started 2 years of military service so he closed down all showing and breeding during that time. After returning from serving his country, he found his mother had obtained a Miniature Poodle which he showed and finished. That Poodle became the foundation of a long and successful breeding program that included many group and best in show winners. Mr. Lanard has also finished a good many English Pointers. He is presently campaigning a German Pinscher for a friend whose present record stands at 22 best in shows.

Mr. Lanard is a senior AKC judge. His AKC assignments over the last two years have included 2 Best in Show, 29 Group, and 4 Junior Showmanship Competition assignments. Several years ago he was a Group judge at the televised Westminster Kennel Club Show and recently judged Lhasa Apsos at the Westminster February 2000 show.

Mr. Lanard started judging for ARBA 6 years ago and is one of five that have been designated by ARBA as "all-rounders". He has enjoyed his times with the breeders and owners of rare breeds. He has been judging Chinooks for 6 years and looks forward to judging the upcoming Chinook Specialty.

The Federation is honored that ARBA selected the Honorable Phillip A. Lanard III as the Chinook Specialty judge for the Federation's first Regional Specialty.

The special was widely advertised to the COA Membership, COA-L list members and Chinook-L list members. Although this will end the special pricing, membership in both levels will remain open and we hope to continue to welcome new members.

For anyone wanting to make a last minute payment and make it under the deadline, contact the Federation Finance Office for instructions. Do NOT send credit card information to the Federation. We thank all of those that have made this initial membership drive such a success.

CDT will usually be presented in conjunction with activities where a large number of Chinook breeders and exhibitors are anticipated.

Our first CDT will be the Friday evening of the U.K.C. Premier weekend, at the Airport Holiday Inn, Kalamazoo, MI:

    • Traveling with Your Pet
    • Test Breedings--What and Why?
    • Puppy temperament testing and socialization
    • Dog identification: DNA, tattoos, microchips
    • Structure and movement of sled dogs as it relates to the Chinook standard
    • Kennel management - If the U.K.C. investigates, what are they looking for?

We still have approximately 10 minutes available for additional material in our upcoming June seminar. If you have suggestions on what we can add, please contact Joyce Maley, the point of contact for the CDT program. When all plans are finalized, we will post the schedule and listing of guest speakers. There is no charge for this seminar.

Bylaws Update from the Information Manager
    April 6, 2000

The initial Federation Board is in place and in the process of completing the Bylaws approval process. You can see a working copy of the Bylaws by following the Bylaws link above. This will give you an opportunity to see how the Federation will work. At the end of the Bylaws there is a signature block for each Board Member. When each date is filled in beside their name, the Bylaws become officially accepted and binding upon all Federation members.

After approval of the Bylaws, the Board will establish a dues structure for Breeder/Exhibitor Members. When the dues are established, we will announce the dues structure and the application process in a Chinook Online! update.

We will update Federation Board decisions and Federation activities right here, in Chinook Online! to make sure you know everything as soon as it happens. If you have problems navigating through the site, feel free to E-mail me and describe any problems you are having. I will be glad to get back to you as soon as I can.

    Information Manager's Welcome
    March 26, 2000

WE ARE HERE! It has been a long time in the making, but the International Federation of Chinook Breeders and Exhibitors, Inc., is now a reality. Responding to overwhelming requests to have an organization to represent the purebred Chinook to a variety of showing venues, a group of Chinook breeders and exhibitors have risen to the challenge.

Our primary focus is the maintenance and improvement of the Chinook dog, through responsible breeding and ownership. The Federation gives a forum for all Chinook breeders to work together to improve breeding practices. Health and performance issues will be a primary focus. In addition, the expansion of showing and performance venues will give us additional opportunities to test the quality of our Chinooks. Combining health, performance and conformation information will help each of us make wise breeding decisions.

Education is a major tool of the Federation. The Federation now offers an online course on the Chinook Standard. As demand dictates, we will continue to add online courses to allow all interested individuals to increase their understanding of Chinook related subjects. These courses are free of charge, but are only available online.

The Federation uses state of the art communication techniques. The online newsletter provides instant access to club activities and showing opportunities. No longer will you wait for a newsletter or magazine in the mail that covers 2 or 3 months of activities at a time. We will update the Web site everytime we have new information. However, that doesn't mean those without Internet access will be left out in the cold. For an additional fee, those with out online access will receive everything in printed format. In short, online or not, as soon as we know of activities involving Chinooks, you will know.

    Membership Information
    March 26, 2000

The Federation is a professional organization for Chinook breeders and exhibitors. There are two membership classifications:

  • Breeder/Exhibitor Members are members who want to participate in the decision-making process of the Federation. Each person applying for Breeder/Exhibitor Membership must obtain sponsorship from two Federation Board Members. Contact any board member for the membership fee structure.

  • Chinook Supporter Members are members who want to participate in the Federation and support the Chinook breed at a reduced cost. These members can interact fully in all Federation activities and discussions, but do not vote on official Federation policies. Chinook Supporters donate a minimum of $5.00 yearly to the Federation. For those not online, an addition $15.00 is requested to cover printing and mailing costs.

Please refer to the Bylaws for a full explanation of the membership structure. All fees are subject to change.
